The earth was shaking.. the quakes are quaking..
DATELINE NEW ZEALAND:
A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of New Zealand today, triggering an early-morning tsunami threat on the shores of the Pacific nation.
New Zealand authorities have urged an evacuation in a 100-mile stretch of coast on the North Island, telling people to flee to high ground or 'as far inland as possible'.
High waters were expected to lash the coast shortly after 3am local time with a US monitoring service predicting 3ft waves and local disaster officials warning of an hours-long threat of 'unpredictable surges'.
Witnesses on the North Island described a 'very long, swaying shake' and houses making 'cracking sounds' in a tremor which some thought had lasted for as long as a minute, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.
'Hope everyone is ok out there - especially on the east coast who would have felt the full force of that earthquake,' prime minister Jacinda Ardern posted on Instagram.
DATELINE ICELAND:
A volcanic eruption in Iceland 'could be imminent' after more than 18,000 earthquakes hit the island in the past week, authorities have warned.
On Wednesday alone, there were about 2,500 earthquake detected and since midnight on Thursday almost 800 earthquakes measured, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO).
The largest earthquake measured magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale, which is enough to cause 'some damage to weak structures'.
DATELINE UTAH:
Two earthquakes near Fillmore, Utah, in September 2018 and April 2019 measured 4.0 and 4.1 on the Richter scale, their sequences recorded by seismometers within the Utah Regional Seismic Network, which is focusing scientists' attention on the Black Rock Desert.
Hidden below the vast arid expanses of Utah is an ancient volcanic complex that has been revealed to be a great deal more active than it might seem, according to scientists.
According to a new study, two recent earthquakes near Fillmore in 2018 and 2019, measuring 4.0 and 4.1 on the Richter scale, while not indicative of tectonic activity, were echoes of the ancient Black Rock volcanic field in Utah's Sevier Desert. The two earthquake sequences were recorded by seismometers within the Utah Regional Seismic Network, as well as by instruments forming part of an experimental project called Utah FORGE.
After analysis of the wave-forms was carried out, it became evident that these quakes were not the result of tectonic activity stemming from fault movements, that typically results in more seismic energy.
DATELINE OREGON:
A 45-minute “earthquake swarm” reported this week near Oregon’s Mount Hood has the U.S. Geological Survey offering explanations — and reassurance the volcano is not becoming more active.
Dozens of earthquakes, most not felt on the surface, came in succession around 12:13 p.m. Monday, centered about a half mile southwest of the volcano, geologists say.
Data show the quakes came from 3 to 4 miles beneath the summit, officials said Tuesday. The volcano is about 50 miles east of Portland
